The year was 1970. I graduated high school the year before and started college. My best friend had a ‘68 Firebird and I had a brand spanking new GTO. We were groovy man! We were made for this time and we knew it!
That same year a revival broke out at Asbury Theological Seminary. Teams were sent out to share the gospel. After giving their testimonies at our church in Anderson, IN, God moved a second time. Revival burst into flames and for the next fifty days and nights the church was packed with standing room only, and out the door. People were getting saved, souls were restored, and lives were rededicated to the Lord. Kindled hearts grew restless, desiring to tell others, not only in Anderson, but also around the United States. Teams were sent out from our church now, and fires were ignited wherever we went. Like the early church we were eager to tell others of a Christ who loved them and had given himself on the cross that they may have a life of hope.
We discovered that cars and sports and college were not why we were made for that time. No, we were made for the gospel, and the sharing of it with others. We were made for that time of the Vietnam War and unrest to demonstrate that God is still on His throne, and still in charge.
Is today any different? Our grandchildren are growing up in a time of turmoil and division never before seen in our world. Satan is throwing everything he can at them to belittle, discourage, and destroy their faith. He wants to pulverize God’s truth using many things at one time. If he can confuse them, he’s got them!
“From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.” (Acts 17:26 NIV)
Do you hear that? They were made for this time! Our grandchildren were made for this time! You were also made for this time! God has a plan for their lives. He knows what has come, and what is coming. He is still in control. He will use them to bring others out of this deception. He will use us to stand by their side and encourage and strengthen them to stand strong in the Lord. We are the patriarch’s of our family and just because we are retired (or close to it) does not mean our faith, our trust, our responsibility to our children and grandchildren is over.
First and foremost to bring glory to God!
In the first chapter we find that Matthew established the lineage of Jesus. These verses are not just a boring line of genealogy. They are a vital link to God’s plan of salvation. These fathers, who became grandfathers, lived godly lives before their children, exactly as God had planned, until the arrival of His Son, Jesus. In turn, these men produced godly grandchildren. Through the generations that followed, and to today, we see fathers and grandfathers leading and teaching their families.
When was the last time you shared the Gospel with someone? Whenwas the last time you shared the Gospel with your children or grandchildren, or even talked about it? When was the last time you prayed with them, or in front of them?
Again, the first priority of Christian Grandfather Magazine is to bring glory to God! Secondly, we will provide ideas on how to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If we can learn to discuss the gospel with our grandchildren, regardless of their age, we can share it with anyone.
In this busy world we have begun to overlook our responsibility of living godly lives and teaching our grands? We enjoy them for who they are and love on them when they come over. There is nothing wrong with that. But, there is more we need to do when they are in our presence. The Bible tells us, “You shall teach them [diligently] to your children [impressing God’s precepts on their minds and penetrating their hearts with His truths], speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.” (Deuteronomy 11:19 AMP) That command doesn’t stop just because we are grandfathers.
The purpose of this magazine is to encourage you to be more spiritually active in your children and grandchildren’s lives. It is also to motivate you to build a stronger spiritual foundation in your own life. Christian Grandfather Magazine will present faith-building articles from a variety of writers to encourage a closer spiritual bond with God, your wife, your children, and your grandchildren.
